Textured in Portland: What 27 Years Behind the Chair Taught Me

Textured in Portland: What 27 Years Behind the Chair Taught Me

When I first started styling hair in Portland, there weren’t many places where clients with textured hair felt seen—or truly understood. Over the past 27 years at Chadowboxx Salon, that’s become my life’s work: to change that experience.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that textured hair isn’t difficult—it’s diverse. Each curl, coil, or wave tells its own story. The key is listening to what it needs, not forcing it to behave like someone else’s texture.

So much of my approach has been built on education, empathy, and science—educating clients on moisture balance, protecting disulfide bonds, and using heat with intention. And yes, that means sometimes unlearning what we were taught about what “healthy hair” looks like.

Through this journey, I developed the Mylani Vegan Hair & Body Care line to bridge the gap between salon performance and at-home maintenance. Each formula supports scalp health, hydration, and strength—without harsh chemicals or heavy build-up.

Portland may be known for its rain, creativity, and coffee, but there’s also a growing community of people who value conscious beauty and cultural authenticity. I’m proud to be part of that movement and to represent textured hair in the city I love.

Because after nearly three decades behind the chair, I’ve learned that when you care for textured hair with consistency and love—it rewards you with resilience, brilliance, and confidence every single time.
